Home > U.S. Tornadoes, Flooding: Death Toll Climbs as Plains Brace for More Storms

A tornado ripped through a city on the U.S.-Mexico border today, killing at least 13 people, and more storms and flooding battered Texas and the souther Great Plains.
The tornadoes and flooding that forced at least 2,000 Texans from their homes came out of a line of storms that stretched from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes, dumping record rainfall on parts of the Plains and Midwest.
The deadly tornado that hit Ciudad Acuna, Mexico, just two miles from Laughlin Air Force base, was one of at least 15 reported today. It tore a baby from its mother's arms, ripped apart buildings, tossed cars and trucks around, in some cases leaving them standing on end.
In the flooding that hit parts of Texas, one driver had to be rescued as the surge of water swept away his SUV outside San Antonio. At least five people were killed, and 12 were missing as a result of flash floods along the Blanco River between Austin and San Antonio, officials said.
Among the dead was 14-year-old Damien Blade, who was found with his dog in a suburban Dallas storm drain. Investigators said they apparently had drowned but their investigation continues. According to police, Damien's family reported him missing about 10 p.m. Sunday after one of his two dogs showed up alone at the house, wet and extremely muddy.
The 12 people missing were all staying in a vacation home that was swept away by rushing floodwaters.

In the town of Wimberley alone, as many as 400 homes have been destroyed.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said after flying over the area today that the region looked like it had been hit by a tsunami.
"The area around the river, where these huge massive trees just mowed down, like grass that was mowed down by a lawn mower," he said. "You see how powerful the river flow has been."
The force of the water was so strong, that some homes that were in its path looked like they had been hit by a tornado.

Within a matter of hours, the Blanco River rose from 5 feet to more than 40 feet, and the flood came rushing with such force that it swept away a concrete bridge.
Abbott added 24 counties today to the list of those where he has declared a state of emergency, and he said that with more rain in the forecast, more counties could be on that list:
"The rain bands that span literally from south of the Rio Grande to north of the Red River have been relentless, day after day after day," he said.
The storms were blamed for three deaths Saturday and Sunday, including two in Oklahoma and one in Texas, where a man's body was recovered from a flooded area along the Blanco River.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

7 Tips to Customize WordPress Twenty Eleven Theme

A lot of WordPress websites are built upon, and still use, the previous default WordPress Theme Twenty Eleven. I will show you 7 tips that you can use to customize the Twenty Eleven Theme.
The WordPress Twenty Eleven Theme
With most of the tips you don’t even need to know much about PHP coding, just how to install a special Twenty Eleven plugin.

Tip 1: Install WordPress Twenty Eleven Theme Extensions

Twenty Eleven Theme Extensions is the plugin you want as it can solve most of the problems people are facing with Twenty Eleven.
To install this plugin go to Plugins -> Add new -> Search Twenty Eleven Theme Extensions and select it from the list.
Click on install and confirm that you want to install it. After installation make sure you click the active option.
You should now see an extra option under Appearance called Theme Extensions. We will go though the options in this post as most of the options  you want to change.
Twenty Eleven Theme Extensions Options

Tip 2:  Twenty Eleven Sidebar on All pages

If you look at the default layout of the Twenty Eleven theme you will see that the sidebar is only visible on the Home page.
But you want to have that sidebar on all pages, including posts. If you only want it on pages, you can select that option via the  Page Attributes in the right side menu of your edit screen.
Page Attribute Sidebar Template Option
Unfortunately that means you have to do that on every page and you still wouldn’t have the sidebar on posts. To change this, click the upper two options in the extensions plugin settings.
Twenty Eleven Sidebar on All Pages

 Tip 3:  Change the Header Image and Size on Twenty Eleven

The default header size for the Twenty Eleven Theme is 1000 width x 288 pixels in height.  Which is pretty high and takes a lot of space on your screen. You can easily change that with the extensions option Change the height of new images.
Twenty Eleven Theme Header Change
If you already have some headers installed, make sure you check the second option as well.
Better would be to create and upload new images in the right format or crop them upon upload.
You can upload new header images via Appearance -> Header -> Choose or Upload a new header file. Once you uploaded more than one header file you can switch the headers automatically by selecting the Random option.
Twenty Eleven Header Uploads and Selection
Note: Did you know you can set a special header for each post or page? Create a special header in the same size as the standard one (here it is now 1000 x 175 pixels) 1000 x 288 is the Twenty Eleven standard format.
Now go to the page or post you want that header to show up and select the option Featured Image, upload or select the header and update the page / post.

Tip 4:  Twenty Eleven Theme Change Menu Color and More

One of the most asked questions on Twenty Eleven is how to customize the Menu Color and other items like the link colors and text color. With the extensions plugin you need to check the Custom Color option to get this done.
Once you activate that option you get new selections in the the Appearance -> Theme Options. You ahd a few options on that in the standard theme options, now you get a big list of things you can change.
Customize the colors on Twenty Eleven
For the menu color change look for Menu Background Color, Menu Highlight Color and if needed Menu Text Color.
You can select the colors from the button next to the color, or put in the hex (#de000a).  If you want color suggestions, check out http://www.colorhexa.com/ and http://www.colorcombos.com/

Tip 5: Remove Search from Twenty Eleven Top

As we have the last option in the extensions called Custom Style we can used that directly to remove / hide the Search Option in the top title area. Activate the Custom style option and place this code in it:
/* Search Form */
 #branding #searchform {
 display: none;
 }
So you should end up with this:
Twenty Eleven Remove Hide Search

Tip 6:  Remove / Hide Twenty Eleven Topmenu  Navigation

Some people don’t like to have the Top Navigation menu below the header image and only want to use a custom menu in the sidebar.
Twenty Eeleven Main Navigation Menu
If you also want to remove that menu, then this simple trick is for you. First create a custom menu, lets call it Blank. You leave that menu empty, so not even a Home link. Now set that Blank  as the primary navigation option and check your website, you should not see the navigation anymore.
Custom Blank Menu
Example, Twenty Eleven with smaller header and no main navigation bar.
Twenty Eeleven Main Navigation removed

Tip 7: Remove the Comment Function from Twenty Eleven Pages

On Twenty Eleven pages you can see that there is also the possibility to comment on that page.
If its a real static pages, like a contact form or a sitemap, you don’t want people to comment on the content of that page.
I only want comments on my posts, not on pages. So the option to disable all comments is not an option. Instead change the screen options display when you are in the edit screen for a page.
Start with the screen options tab (upper right corner)
WordPress screen display options
On that screen enable the Discussion option by checking it, this will display the Comments option below your main content edit screen.
D:Afbeeldingenitmentorwordpress-discussion-options.png
Un-check both options and the comments form will be gone from your page. You need to do this on all current and new pages!

Bonus Tip: Remove / Customize Proudly Powered by WordPress from Twenty Eleven Footer

In this case we do need to work on a core file from the Twenty Eleven Theme, specially the file called footer.php
It would be better to do this on a Child Theme, but for this purpose it will not be such a problem. You just need to make sure you do it again it there should come an update for the Twenty Eleven Theme.
Go to Appearance -> Editor -> Open the file Footer (footer.php)
Search for <div id="site-generator">
You need to replace the code between that code and the first </div> after that code. replace the code:
<?php do_action( 'twentyeleven_credits' ); ?>
<a href="<?php echo esc_url( __( 'http://wordpress.org/', 'twentyeleven' ) ); ?>" title="
<?php esc_attr_e( 'Semantic Personal Publishing Platform', 'twentyeleven' ); ?>"><?php printf
( __( 'Proudly powered by %s', 'twentyeleven' ), 'WordPress' ); ?></a>
With
<p>Copyright &copy; - <?php echo date('Y'); ?>
<a href="http://www.example.com" rel="nofollow">
 Special Example Link Website</a></p>
Change www.example.com with your own URL and the text for the link to fit your website. All done, you should see your own text in the footer and it should link back to your homepage.
Other Twenty Eleven Theme customization’s?
Above are the most request changes for the WordPress Twenty Eleven theme. Did they work for you? Or do you have extra needs or idea’s or suggestions?

Will the Surface 3 Tablet Be a Game-Changer for Microsoft?

Microsoft has been trying for years -- and, for the most part, failing -- to compete in the tablet arena with the iPad. The huge success of Apple’s tablet, and to a lesser extent, the various Android tablets, has convinced Microsoft that there’s gold in them thar devices.
It has called its line Surface, and over the years has tried a succession of Surfaces. None have set the world on fire with sales, although each new version has improved on the previous one.
The latest version is the Surface Pro 3.
Sticker Shock
But a big barrier to the Surface’s success has always been the high price tag. When you outfit it modestly well, it’ll probably cost you $1,000 or more, making it a good bit more expensive than a typical iPad.
This issue is that people are used to paying a premium for an Apple product, knowing that they’re going to get their money’s worth. On the Windows side of the ledger, though, price has always been a more important factor. And even though the Surface Pro 3 is a more capable work machine than an iPad, it's still more than many are willing to spend. If folks want a laptop for work, there are plenty of cheaper Windows choices than a Pro.
That may have all changed with the introduction of the Surface 3, the first true hybrid tablet/laptop at an attractive price point.
Note that I didn’t say Surface “Pro” 3 – it’s just the “Surface 3”. It can be confusing to distinguish between the two, so I wanted to point out a few of the differences to help you tell them apart.

2 Major Differences
There are two primary distinctions between the Surface Pro 3 and the Surface 3: price and capability. The Surface Pro 3 is much more expensive, as well as more capable. But that doesn’t mean it’s the best Surface tablet for you.
The Surface 3 starts at $499, which definitely makes it competitive with the entry-level iPad Air 2, the most current iPad model. Consider, for example, that the cheapest Surface 3 has a 64GB hard drive, while the iPad offers a microscopic 16GB hard drive for the same price. That’s four times the storage, which can make a big difference.
Back to the Surface Pro 3 comparison. The cheapest Surface Pro 3 comes in at $799, so you’re laying out $300 more for the higher-level tablet.
The Surface 3 uses the same Windows 8.1 operating system (OS) as the Surface Pro 3, and will be equally upgradeable to Windows 10 when it releases this summer (allegedly -- always allegedly when you’re talking about software release dates). The upgrade will be free.
Also like its upscale cousin, the Surface 3 will have as a (necessary) option a separate keyboard, called a Type Cover. The keyboard serves double duty as a cover (not surprising, since it’s in the name). With the keyboard attached, it becomes much more like a laptop, but one with touchscreen functionality when you want to use it as a tablet.
Smaller, Lighter
The Surface 3 is lighter and smaller than the Surface Pro 3, with a 10.8-inch screen vs. the Pro’s 12-inch screen. These smaller dimensions mean that the Surface 3 is nearly a half-pound lighter than the Pro, which can add up if you tote it around everywhere.
Where it suffers compared to the Pro is in the less-powerful processor and (generally) less RAM. The Surface 3 isn’t up to heavy-duty tasks like photo and video editing, and will perform the things it does do slightly more slowly than the Pro (although for typical stuff, you won’t notice any difference). The Surface 3 is more for Web surfing, social media, streaming video, etc. It will also function well for students, as it will work fine for writing papers, note-taking and similar duties.
In that way, it's pretty much identical to the iPad; they can both handle the same types of workloads. But the Surface 3, with the Type Cover, is a more capable laptop-style computer than the iPad. And it keeps you in the Windows world, which is a more comfortable place for many.
Neither the Surface 3 nor the iPad can touch the Surface Pro 3 for productivity, though. So if you want something closer to a real laptop or desktop replacement, the Pro is a better bet. Ultimately, it comes down to how you’ll use your Surface. I think that, everything being equal, that the Surface 3 is a better value: it’s lighter and significantly cheaper than the Pro, making it more affordable for more people without crippling compromises on performance.
Coming Soon
According to Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc, the Surface 3 is available for preorder now, and will be on officially on sale beginning May 5. If you live anywhere near a Microsoft store, they should have one available for a test drive, which I'd recommend.
I’ll be writing much more about the Surface 3 in the coming months. For now, suffice to say that I’m really, really excited about a Microsoft tablet.
Finally.
